No roads lead to Tortuguero — and that's the magic. Here is every way to reach our car-free island, step by step.
Tortuguero is one of the few places left in Costa Rica that you simply cannot drive to. The village sits on a narrow strip of land between jungle canals and the Caribbean Sea, and the final leg of every journey is a scenic boat ride.
From San José (SJO)
- •Bus + boat (most popular): Take an early bus from San José to Cariari, then continue to the La Pavona dock. From La Pavona it's a beautiful 60–90 minute boat ride through the canals to Tortuguero. Total journey: about 5–6 hours.
- •Private transfer: We arrange door-to-door private transport from your San José hotel to La Pavona with a coordinated boat connection. Departure must be before 1 p.m. — ask us on WhatsApp.
- •Charter flight: A 45-minute flight from San José lands directly on the Tortuguero airstrip. The fastest and most scenic option.
From Liberia (LIR)
Allow a full travel day: private transfer or bus to La Pavona (about 4–5 hours) plus the boat ride. We can arrange the whole route for you.
The boat ride
Whichever route you choose, the final stretch is unforgettable — keep your camera ready for caimans, herons, kingfishers and the occasional sloth hanging over the water.
